Religion contemporary France course

PantheonThe course Religion in contemporary France is offered exclusively to Accès students.  Students will learn how the history of France, particularly the relationship between Church and State, continues to shape the religious landscape of the country today.  Students will learn to use some of the tools of sociological analysis to better understand:

  • authority and religious institutions
  • the theories about the process of secularization
  • religion as a form of social solidarity
  • religion as an element of national identity
  • the effects of globalization on religious movements

The course is divided into three parts:

  1. Theoretical approaches to the sociology of religion (taught in English)
  2. From Eldest Daughter of the Church to secular republic, historical analysis of religion in French society (taught in French)
  3. The contemporary religious landscape of France (taught in French)

Students are evaluated based on a written research project on a religious community in Strasbourg, a final exam and class participation.

The course is worth 2 US credits.
